Step 1: Check the principles
Bookkeeping Fundamentals covers manual methods, double-entry accounting, ledgers, trial balances, transaction recording, reconciliation and financial reporting. Compare it when those concepts need work. Someone with a solid bookkeeping foundation may be able to start with software training instead.
Step 2: Choose the software branch
QuickBooks Online Part 1 and Sage Accounting Part 1 are alternatives for different products. Pick the software your work requires. The Sage syllabus specifies Sage 50; the QuickBooks syllabus specifies the Online product. Do not book both simply because they appear at the same level.
| Starting situation | Course to compare |
|---|---|
| New to bookkeeping principles | Bookkeeping Fundamentals |
| Understand the principles; new to QuickBooks Online | QuickBooks Online Part 1 |
| Understand the principles; new to Sage 50 | Sage Accounting Part 1 |
| Comfortable with routine QuickBooks work | Review Part 2 topics and prerequisites |
| Comfortable with routine Sage 50 work | Review Part 2 topics and prerequisites |
Step 3: Add advanced work when it is relevant
The Part 2 outlines cover more involved workflows such as payroll, inventory, reporting, budgets and project tracking. Check both the course topic and the feature access in your software. A topic being taught does not mean every subscription includes it.
Give yourself a practical task between courses and discuss the next learning gap. The listed courses are short training programmes, not a guaranteed route to a professional designation or a job. Use the accounting course comparison and current booking pages to plan time and fees before enrolling.
