Power Query or VBA: Choose Your Training Path

What the two Power Concepts courses cover

Expert Data Management includes importing data, cleaning irregular formats, connecting sources and automating data updates with Power Query. It also introduces Power Pivot models, relationships, measures and KPIs.

Expert Macros and Forms includes creating macros, understanding VBA modules, reviewing and making minor code edits, and building forms with controls. Its syllabus is an introduction to practical automation; it is not a promise to teach an entire programming curriculum or deliver a finished business system.

Use an example to narrow the choice

A monthly report that begins with differently formatted exports is a useful example to discuss with the data-management instructor. A workbook that needs a button, a controlled input form or a repeatable set of actions is a useful example for the macros-and-forms conversation.

These tasks can overlap. Ask which part of the process the class will address and what you should already know. If the business needs someone to build and maintain the finished solution, clarify that requirement separately from attendance at a public course.

Check the working environment

Your organisation may limit macros or connections to external data. Tell the trainer which Excel application you use and what restrictions apply before booking. Do not change security settings just to make an example run.

Decide between data preparation and recorded actions

Power Query is a useful course direction when the repeated task is importing, reshaping and refreshing source data. Macros and Forms is a different direction when the task involves workbook actions, controls or understanding VBA. Write the process in plain steps before choosing the tool.

For example, combining monthly exports suggests a data-preparation discussion, while a button that runs workbook actions suggests a macro discussion. Some workflows use both. Ask for the appropriate sequence rather than choosing solely because one tool sounds more advanced.
