Starting Power Query: Skills and Course Requirements

Prepare for Power Query without guessing your level

The public Power Query pathway is Excel Expert Data Management, which explicitly requires Advanced Data Management or equivalent experience. Beginner Power Query does not necessarily mean beginner Excel: a learner can be comfortable with tables and PivotTables while being new to the import editor.

Compare the practical requirements

Before booking, try preparing one structured source table and building a checked PivotTable summary. If that foundation is unfamiliar, compare Advanced Data Management first. If it is comfortable, describe the source files you want to import and the manual preparation you currently repeat.

Work through an example

For a first Power Query exercise, use one small file with a date, identifier and amount. Inspect the steps used to import and set types, then replace the file with another using the same structure. The learner should explain both the result and the assumptions on which refresh depends.

Decide what to book or request

Ask which version and practice environment the course requires. Start with an approved local example before discussing sensitive data or restricted connectors. The aim is a repeatable, understandable preparation process, not simply a query that refreshes successfully once.
