Choose between correcting data and building a cleaning process

A one-time cleanup and a repeatable monthly import need different approaches. Start by listing the defects: duplicate records, inconsistent categories, text dates, missing values or columns that change shape. Decide which errors can be fixed at the source and which require a controlled preparation step.

Compare the practical requirements

Advanced Data Management covers validation, duplicates, filters and PivotTable reporting. Expert Data Management adds Power Query imports, cleaning, updates and models. Choose the former to improve collection and inspect an existing table; compare the latter when preparation must be repeated as new source files arrive.

Work through an example

For a practice example, keep an untouched source containing a leading-zero code, an invalid date and a duplicate transaction. Record the accepted and rejected row counts after cleaning. Removing a warning is not enough: the learner should explain what was changed and how the total was affected.

Decide what to book or request

In a team enquiry, include a small sanitised file, the refresh frequency and the owner of each source. Ask for an exception-handling and handover exercise. The desired output is a process another person can repeat and check, not an unexplained workbook that looks cleaner once.
