Define a DAX measure before writing it

A measure needs a clear business definition and an understood data model. A DAX-focused enquiry should identify the calculation and how filters are expected to affect it. Memorising a function does not resolve an ambiguous metric.

An illustrative practice exercise

Illustrative exercise: compare total sales with a margin ratio using a small sales table and product reference. Define whether the ratio is calculated from totals or averaged from row percentages and inspect the difference.

Check the result

Test totals, empty selections and unequal record sizes. A measure that looks right in one visual can still behave differently in another context.
